Dreamy Sail - Sicily to Otranto, Italy

48 Hour Passage

Aeolus, the Roman god of the winds is with us. We raised the sails and turned off the engine right out of Syracuse Harbour, Sicily and have sailed the past 48 hours without turning on the engine. Remarkable! I can’t recall when we last have been so favored by the winds for the entire passage.

Leaving the harbor was dicey: our anchor snagged a fishing line attached to traps. With 25‑kt wind and 2‑ft waves pitching the boat, retrieval was difficult and tense. Ken reached down, slipped a knife from the pocket of his life jacket, and cut the line — the first time he’d ever had to use it.

Sunrise. My favorite time of overnight passages - light emerges and all is well with the world.

A perfect sunrise.
